UTI Overview

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are diseases of the urinary system caused by pathogenic bacteria.

Bacteria that Cause UTIs

  1. Escherichia Coli (E. Coli)
  2. Protus Mirabilis
  3. Enterococcus Faecalis
  4. Staphylococcus Saprophyticus
  5. Klebsiella Pneuminiae

It often occurs when bacteria invade the urinary organ including urethra, bladder and the kidney causing underlaying health conditions.

Types of UTIs (Diseases of the urinary system)

  1. Urethritis: This is the swelling/inflammation of the urinary tube that carries urine out of the body from the bladder. the bacteria feeds onto the inner layers (Epithelial cells) of the urethra causing simple sours which swells and  narrows   the urethra. this condition is characterized by sensation during urination, oliguria (Low urine output) and pain on urination (Dysuria).
  2. Cystitis: This is the infection of the bladder caused by pathogenic bacteria which perforate the inside of the bladder causing inflammations and swelling. A patient with cystitis may experience urine retention (Failure to completely empty the bladder), pain when voiding urine, lower abdominal pain when urine is kept for so long and immediately after emptying the bladder, Frequent urination or yellowish and turbid urine.
  3. Nephritis: A condition associated with the swelling or information of the tissues in the kidney including nephrons and glomerulus. Much of body cell waste metabolism is worked upon in the kidney and get execrated through the ureter to the bladder. Cystitis my interrupt the execration process which may result into important nutrients like carbohydrates and proteins sieve through with urine. Hematuria (Urine stained with blood) is one of the leading signs of nephritis but also foamy or bubbly urine (excessive urine smell) due to excessive proteins, jaundice (yellowish of the body parts) due to excessive bilirubin obtained from excessive destruction of red blood cells.

Signs and Symptoms of UTIs

  •  Prolonged and strong urge to urinate
  •  Burning sensation while urinating
  • The urine may look cloudy, red, bright pink or cola-colored with strong odor
  • Pain in the lower pelvis region
  • Urinate more than 8 times a day
  • Have a weak or interrupted urination
  • Feel a need to urinate after finishing urination
  • Feel like bladder is not completely empty,
  •  Jaundice (yellowish of the body parts)
  • Hematuria (Urine stained with blood)
  • Foamy or bubbly urine (excessive urine smell)

There has been improved natural therapies available in Uganda approved by national drug authority and western Medicines that fight bacteria called antibiotics. Serious UTIs may need treatment with antibiotics that are given through the vein (Intravenous) which happens at a hospital and Pain relievers can be used to manage urinary tract infection.
